A 36-year-old scrap metal dealer from Aberdeen has been arrested just an hour after police received a tip-off about him loading two bakkie loads of scrap metal into his vehicle.
Police spokesperson Captain Bradley Rawlinson says the tip-off was received at 11 pm on Tuesday and just after midnight on Wednesday his vehicle was pulled over by police in Graaff-Reinet.
He says the car was searched by the Visible Policing Unit from both Aberdeen and Graaff Reinet who found copper, brass, aluminium. 12 bags of burnt copper, aluminium pipes, wire and cables weighing 336,2 kgs.
Captain Rawlinson says then the driver could not explain as to why he had scrap metal in his possession he was arrested.
The shop owner is expected to appear in the Graaff-Reinet Court soon on charges of possessing stolen scrap metal.
The Aberdeen Station Commander thanked the Community for their assistance in making the arrest.
