The Acting Executive Mayor of Mossel Bay, Cliffie Bayman, has expressed his condolences to Hoërskool Sao Bras following the drowning of one of their Grade 8 learners.
Thirteen-year-old Linton Standford went swimming with his older brother at De Bakke Beach on Saturday when he got into trouble.
According to an initial report from the National Sea Rescue Institute, Standford's 17-year-old brother tried to rescue him when he too disappeared under the water.
The NSRI, which was busy with a routine training course at the time, immediately responded to the incident.
The older brother managed to get back to shore but his brother was located underwater and recovered onto a sea rescue craft.
The NSRI says efforts to resuscitate him were unsuccessful and he was declared dead on the scene.
Alderman Bayman said no parent should lose a child, and Linton's death is especially tragic when considering that he passed away in the prime of his life.
