Learners from a Butterworth primary school as well as local residents protested outside the magistrate's court on Thursday.
That's where a 33 year old man made his first court appearance for the rape of a five year old girl.
He was arrested by members of the community on Monday.
Police spokesperson, captain Jackson Manatha, says protestors carried placards calling for bail to be denied to the accused.
Manatha says the case against the man was postponed to the third of April when he will apply for legal aid.
He remains in custody until then.
