School bus accident claims four lives near Mthatha


Four schoolchildren have been killed following a bus accident near Mthatha.

The bus, carrying 46 learners, overturned at the Mdumbi village near Ngeleni Town in the O.R.Tambo District Municipality on Monday morning.

The Eastern Cape Health Department spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo, said the one boy was declared dead on the scene and three other boys died in hospital.

Kupelo said other learners in a critical condition were rushed to the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

According Kupelo the bus was transporting the learners to school.

He said learners, who were in a critical condition, were rushed the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha.

"The traffic police and the road traffic management will take over to investigate the cause of the accident. The vehicle will be examined to determine the possible cause of the accident. Our part as health was to respond to the scene and we ferried all the injured to various health facilities," Kupelo said
