Schauderville high school demands more teachers

More than a thousand Port Elizabeth learners and parents gathered outside David Livingston High School on Thursday to protest against teacher shortages.

Following the closure of the Schauderville school earlier this week, frustrated parents say the classrooms are overcrowded in addition to the non-payment of temporary teachers.

School Governing Body Chairperson, Marcus Kleit.

"The demands we gave the department is basically that we want teachers to fill the vacant posts, the current temporary and substitute teachers to be on a permanent basis and be paid, currently we are 1017 and the current ratio is 55/1 but the ratio is supposed to be 38/1" he said.

Meanwhile, District Director of Education in Port Elizabeth, Dr Nyathi Ntsiko says they have proof that temporary teachers have been paid.

"We have the proof that those temporary teachers have been paid, in terms of the shortage of educators we are communicating with our head office and we are going to address that within a few days. We are calling on all learners to be back at school tomorrow" Ntsiko said.
