Sassa pledge to resolve social grant issues

The South African Social Security Agency in the Eastern Cape has pledged to speedily resolve the difficulty of an elderly woman who applied for a social grant but did not receive any payment.

Speaking on the DMB on Algoa FM, Sassa Eastern Cape spokesperson, Luzuko Qina, personally apologised to a local woman who's grandmother had to go to local Sassa offices five times to renew and update her details for the old age pension.

Meanwhile, responding to a question on why some people had waited up to two years for their grants to be approved, Qina said this was unusual.

He says grant approval should take no longer than an hour or so and that if anyone had to wait longer than that, they would have a case for litigation.

"My understanding and in terms of organisational operations even going beyond 3 months calls for litigation and people are not supposed to be sent from pillar to post, because you are applying for your right and you are not asking for any favour when you apply for a social grant" Qina said.
