The South African Student Congress (SASCO) at the Nelson Mandela University has called on students to join them at the New Law Court on Tuesday where seven students are expected to appear in connection with Monday's protest on campus.
SASCO referred to the arrests as being orchestrated and claims that the students were "hunted down" inside their residences.
The SRC President and SASCO's Provincial Chairperson Bamanye Matiwane is reportedly one of the seven arrested.
Students who are complaining about safety and security issues on campus says NMU had failed to respond to their demands leaving them with no option but to resort to mass action.
The University has an interdict against protesting students which was already obtained in 2017.
The University says that acts of intimidation and threats are also in contravention of an interdict which was obtained to enforce observances and protection of the rights of staff and students and also to normalise University operations.
NMU says it also reserves the right to follow due legal and disciplinary processes.
