The Rhodes University community says it's devastated by the news of the tragic death of Uyinene Mrwetyana, a University of Cape Town student.
Nene, as she was affectionately known, was the daughter of Rhodes Student Affairs Director, Nomangwane Mrwetyana.
A 42-year-old man was officially charged with her rape and murder and defeating the ends of justice in the Wynberg Magistrate's court on Monday.
She was last seen alive two weeks ago at the Post Office in Claremont, Cape Town, where the accused works.
The accused, who may not yet be named, confessed to the murder during his court appearance on Monday.
Police are still waiting for a final DNA report.
The case has been postponed until the 5th of November and the accused was remanded in custody.
Rhodes University Vice-Chancellor, Dr Sizwe Mabizela, condemned in the strongest possible terms the 19-year-old student's violent death and said it was in the process of setting up a fund to assist the family.
