SAPS member in PE court over false bomb threat

A 38 year old Port Elizabeth police officer was denied bail on Monday when he appeared briefly in the New Law Courts for making a false bomb threat.

Sergeant Nathan Slater was not asked to plead and the case was remanded to the 1st of June for further investigation.

He works at the local criminal record centre and was off-duty at the time of last Friday's incident when he allegedly threatened to detonate an explosive device in a branch of Absa Bank at the Greenacres shopping centre.

Slater, who had reportedly blackened his face, entered the bank and indicated to the bank personnel that he would activate an explosive device if his demands were not met.

A section of the shopping centre was evacuated during the incident and Slater was arrested inside the Absa Branch by K-9 and explosives unit members.

Police Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg said at the time of the incident that Slater was receiving assistance and counselling from the SAPS employee health and wellness section.
