SAPS meet with Peddie stakeholders over taxi murders

Eastern Cape police have moved to quell tensions in the Peddie area following the recent murder of a taxi operator.

The weekend slaying of Vuyani Mpande brought to three the number of people in the taxi industry who were shot and killed in Peddie since June.

Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, said Cluster Commander, Brigadier David Kanuka, met with stakeholders on Wednesday.

"The meeting was attended by a representative from the department for safety and liaison,Representatives from the Department of Transport, chiefs, church leaders, taxi associations operating in the area as well as taxi owners and operators," Governder said.

Govender said Brigadier Kankuka urged the community to report all crimes and criminal activities.

"He assured the community that all the cases that have been opened thus far are receiving priority and being investigated by an experienced team of detectives of the Organised Crime unit and warned that acts of criminality will in no uncertain terms be tolerated.

Brigadier Kanuka made an urgent plea to any person with information on  criminal activities to contact their nearest police station or the crime stop number on 0860010111," she said.

"All information is strictly confidentially and the caller has a choice to remain anonymous," Governder concluded.
