SAPS dismisses Uitenhage policeman charged with rape

The Independent Police Investigative Directorate said a Uitenhage policeman charged with the rape of an eight-year-old has been dismissed.

Spokesperson, Ndileka Cola, said IPID had finalised the investigation and the report submitted to the South African Police Service.

She said SAPS dismissed the Colonel on 5 January.

The former policeman, who was arrested last August, is out on bail of R5000 and is under house-arrest with strict conditions.

Cola said the matter is currently before the Uitenhage Magistrate Court and the Director of Public Prosecutions is yet to determine a trial date and whether the matter would be heard by the Regional or High Court.

“Gender-based violence cases are a high priority for IPID, as such the investigation was swiftly completed with recommendations to have the officer dismissed from the SAPS with a further recommendation for prosecution sent to the DPP,” she said.
