The South African National Roads Agency Limited said it would be spending close to R2bn improving road infrastructure in the Dr AB Xuma Local Municipality in the Eastern Cape.
SANRAL said it announced the three-year project at a recent stakeholder engagement in eNgcobo, attended by local leaders, business forums, and SMME’s among others.
“As the municipality, we want to invest heavily in bulk infrastructure, including developing, improving, and maintaining our national road network, and we are happy to work together with SANRAL to ensure that this happens,” said Mayor, Siyabulela Zangqa.
In a statement, he committed to working closely with the different spheres of government to unlock investments and economic development in Dr A B Xuma municipality.
Meanwhile, SANRAL said it would implement two road infrastructure development projects in the municipality, including the road improvements of the R61 National Road between All Saints to Bayiza, as well as road improvements of the R61 National Road between Qumanco and eNgcobo.
SANRAL says it has set aside a minimum of 30% of the project value to be subcontracted to SMMEs and a minimum of 8% of the project value will be set aside for local labour.
“The construction tender closed on 8 March this year, and the projects are envisaged to take place over three years once a contractor is appointed,” it said.
