JOHANNESBURG, August 13 (ANA) – The South African National Civic Organisation (Sanco) has condemned the fatal shooting of an African National Congress municipal councillor and his wife in Tsolo in the Eastern Cape.
“We call on police not to leave any stone unturned until those responsible for the heinous and barbaric act which has left the nation and our communities reeling in shock are behind bars,†Sanco national spokesman Jabu Mahlangu said on Saturday.
Mahlangu said the possibility that the attack might be linked to recent political killings was worrying.
“Too many lives have been lost to political thuggery and the senseless violence which undermine the outcome of democratic processes and the wishes of our communities. Only prompt arrests and successful prosecution of those who have robbed our communities of their trusted leaders will serve as a deterrent to discourage post elections political killings.â€
He called on communities to protect newly elected councillors and to support them throughout their term of office.
“Accelerated service delivery will be a reality where there is less conflicts, greater community involvement, and accountability,†Mahlangu said.
It was alleged that Zolile Malangeni, 55, who worked as a senior manager at OR Tambo Ntinga Development Agency, and his wife Ntombovuyo, 49, employed at the local economic development department at Mhlontlo municipality, were having supper with their two daughters when two unknown gunmen stormed into the house and shot them at point blank range.
According to police spokesman Lt-Col Mzukisi Fatyela, neighbours heard gunshots and screams coming from the Malangeni home and found the couple lying on the floor.
Fatyela said Ntombovuyo died on the scene while Zolile, who was reportedly earmarked for a senior position in the local council, died at the Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital in Mthatha the following day.
“Their two daughters ran and locked themselves in the bathroom, where they were found by villagers,†he said.
Mahlangu extended Sanco’s condolences to the Malangeni family and the ANC.
