SAHRC wants a ban on corporal punishment in the home

The SA Human Rights Commission wants government to slap a ban on corporal punishment in the home.

This was one of the recommendations by the Commission following an investigation into complaints against a parenting manual published by the Charismatic Joshua Generation Church.

A section of the manual provides explicit detail on the length and thickness of the rod that it suggests parents should use to discipline their children.

The Human Rights Commission found the behaviour of the Church in this regard was unacceptable as violated the Constitution and International Standards.

However, according to Patrick Godana, of Sonke Gender Justice, one of several organisations that complained to the Human Rights Commission, they want government to take this further.

He told Algoa FM News that cabinet had instructed the Department of Social Development to bring South African law into line with various international human rights treaties by prohibiting corporal punishment in the home.

"The Cabinet is asked to make amendments to the Act to prohibit corporal punishment in private spaces. Also to provide different mechanisms and provisions to enable children to access justice. But also to provide appropriate remedies and appropriate remedies to those who are offending" he said
