SAA declines to say how many workers to be retrenched

Cash-strapped South African Airways has declined to say how many workers the national carrier plans to retrench.

Spokesperson, Tlali Tlali, says at this point there's no indication of the actual figure.

However, he says reducing staff will be a "consultative process" with all "stakeholders" in the company.

Tlali says SAA implemented a 90-day action plan towards the end of last year to return to the milestones set by its long-term turn-around strategy.

He says while this has led to some saving, the reality is that SAA's headcount had grown over the past fews years beyond sustainable levels as lossed continue to impair business stability.

SAA's annual reports says that there are 11,462 people employed at the airline.
