SA still viable investment location - VWSA MD

Volkswagen South Africa MD, Thomas Schaeffer, says the biggest acknowledgement for the work being done at the company's Uitenhage plant, had come from their head office in Germany.

Schaeffer, who marked one year at the helm on Monday, said this was the German Board approval for a 4.5 billion rand investment to produce new models in Uitenhage by 2017.

He said approximately two thirds of that would be invested in production facilities and quality, 1.5 billion rand in local supplier capacity and a further estimated R22 million rand in the development and training of employees.

Schaeffer says the investment ensures that the next generation of products will be manufactured in Uitenhage.

He says the investment, despite a generally poor economic outlook, reinforces the belief in South Africa, and Africa as a whole, as a viable investment location with serious future growth prospects.
