SA soldiers found guilty in groundbreaking trial

Eleven soldiers who were accused of assaulting a teenager in the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) have been found guilty in the Military court in what is being described as a groundbreaking trial.

The South African Nasional Defence Force says 16 soldiers were initially accused but five were acquitted.

The 17-year-old boy was accused of stealing plastic buckets and basins belonging to the South African soldiers.

They then took him to their military base where he was assaulted.

The Child only sustained a minor wound during the assault.

Even though no accused were convicted of contravening the provisions of the Prevention of Combating and Torture of Persons Act, they were found guilty of common law assault, this case cleared the way for the future application of the Act
