A 30-year-old man from Greenbushes has been sentenced to an effective 25-years in prison following a house robbery in which an elderly woman died.
Luthando Tana was sentenced in the PE High Court on Thursday.
Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg says Luthando Tana broke into a home in Maasdorp Street in Rowallan Park in May 2020.
83-year-old Marta Snyman died after an altercation with Tana in the passage in which she fell after her head was hit against the wall.
Tana also confronted her 76-year-old husband David who sustained slight head injuries in the incident.
Tana proceeded to steal cellphones, cash, a diamond ring and several household items and was arrested later the same day in Kuyga
He was charged with culpable homicide for the death of Snyman for which he was sentenced to 10-years imprisonment.
He received an additional eight years for assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm, 20-years for assault and five years for housebreaking with the intent to rob.
Tana will serve an effective 25 years behind bars as some of the sentences will run concurrently.
