Former President FW de Klerk has died at the age of 85.

De Klerk, who was the last President under South Africa's apartheid rule, lost his battle with cancer.

The FW de Klerk Foundation's spokesperson Dave Steward confirmed his death on Thursday.

De Klerk and late former president Nelson Mandela were jointly awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1993 for their work for the peaceful termination of the apartheid regime.

De Klerk served as Deputy President under Madiba from 1994-1996.

Meanwhile, the leader of the UDM Bantu Holomisa has expressed his condolences to De Klerk's loved ones.

"He will go down in the history of this country as someone who moved from the conservative side of things and moved towards the centre in order to accommodate other nationalities of this country of finding a solution, may his soul rest in peace," he said.

The leader of the Freedom Front Plus Dr Pieter Groenewald said De Klerk played a major role, although that role was controversial as not everyone agreed with him.

He said under De Klerk's rule a lot of changes took place in the country, even though he himself did not always agree with those changes.
