The Democratic Alliance says infrastructure backlogs in the Eastern Cape Health Department makes the roll-out of the National Health Insurance scheme in the province unrealistic.
DA MPL, John Cupido, says the legislature heard on Wednesday that infrastructure backlogs stand at more than R19b rand and increasing.
He says health care infrastructure not only includes buildings, but also includes important machinery and equipment such as X-ray machines for which there is already a need for at least 27 more in the province.
Cupido says while his party supports affordable universal quality health care for all, the current health care infrastructure and service delivery needs to be on par.
