Rhodes to do more to address sexual violence on campus

Rhodes University said a joint task team would be established to look broadly into the issue of sexual violence on its Grahamstown campus.

This, after an uproar by students when the names of eleven alleged rapists were published on a social media platform this weekend.

This led to angry students going from residence to residence seeking out the alleged offenders, some of whom were held hostage for some time before campus administration intervened.

Police were also called in to assist when one student was still being held Monday morning.

In a statement Rhodes University acknowledged the need to do more to support rape survivors.

It said the the task team would consist of staff and students would also look at how the University can strengthen its systems and procedures.

"The University affirms the need for more effective education about sexual violence and rape.  We operate in a Constitutional state and we need to observe the rights of all," the Rhodes statement said.
