Two people were arrested for public violence and malicious damage to property during a protest on the N6 in Cathcart.
Police spokesperson, lieutenant Namhla Mdleleni, said while the road had been open , residents were still protesting over the decommissioning of the Cathcart Hospital.
Mdleleni said the group of residents had been protesting since Monday morning.
She said all shops in the area have been closed and two trains, one in East London and another in Queenstown, were stuck as protesters were also damaging railway lines.
Mdleleni said two officers were also injured and two vehicles, including a traffic department vehicle, has been damaged.
She said there is a strong police presence.
" We are trying to calm the situation, Public Order police and also police from various stations, Carthcart cluster and the Queenstown cluster are here"she said.
The two people arrested are due to appear in the Cathcart Magistrate court on Tuesday.
