Five students, who were arrested during the anti-rape protests that erupted at Rhodes University (RU), are expected to appear in the Grahamstown Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday.
On April 20, management at RU suspended lectures after police arrested the five students who were participating in an anti-rape protest outside the campus. The students were arrested for blocking the road next to the university.
The five students, including two females, aged between 18 and 23 years. They face charges relating to the Gatherings Act.
Students were demanding that the university take immediate action against 11 male students accused of rape. The names of the male students were circulated on social media.
During the protests female students, who said they would not be cowed to submission, bared their breasts as they protested.
