Students at Rhodes took the streets early on Wednesday morning setting up burning barricades in the main street in front of the Drama Department.Photos and videos posted on Activate Online show police removing burning rubble and debris from the road before sunrise.
Algoa FM News has also learnt that some students broke the door to one of the men's hostel's while fearful students locked themselves inside their hostel rooms.Police are maintaining a strong presence around the Rhodes campus.
Meanwhile, some students at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University who want the institution to be reopened will be holding a picket protest from Wednesday.
The #OPENNMMU campaign will run until Friday, giving voice to those students who support the free education campaign but want to complete their studies while negotiations continue.
