Family members of anti-apartheid activists were in attendance at the unveiling of the Zwide Cemetery Heroes Acre in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday afternoon.
The Zwide Heroes Acre was launched by the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality in honour of anti apartheid activists buried in the cemetery. The Acre also honours unsung freedom fighters whose bodies remain missing to this day.
The daughter of Sipho Hashe, one of the anti-apartheid activists honoured in the Heroes Acre, used the opportunity to encourage struggle heroes' dependents to contact the Department of Human Settlements.
Mandisa Hashe says the department has a housing programme for military veterans and their dependents."We have a project in Port Elizabeth that is meant for the military veterans of all the struggle heroes.
Now that we have our people in one place, I use the opportunity to tell them they should come as dependants of those heroes, to come claim their benefits and apply for their houses, because it is their rights" she said
