The National Sea Rescue Institute has reported the drowning of a 19-year-old woman at West Beach in Port Alfred.
Spokesperson, Craig Lambinon, said in a statement that the deceased was believed to be a student at Rhodes University.
He said NSRI Port Alfred duty crew were activated following reports of a drowning in progress at West Beach on Saturday afternoon where a woman was swept out to sea in a strong rip current.
Lambinon said the NSRI rescue craft reached her in the surf line in rough sea conditions and brought her onto the rescue craft where Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation efforts commenced.
He said paramedics continued with CPR efforts at the rescue station but “after all efforts to resuscitate the female were exhausted sadly the 19-year-old KZN female, believed to be attending Rhodes University, was declared deceased.”
Police have opened an inquest docket.
