Port St Johns police are searching for four suspects following the brutal rape of a Rhodes student at a backpackers establishment at the town last week.
They also robbed the young woman and a group of her fellow students of their laptops and cellphones.
Police captain Mduduzi Godlwana says the students were attacked by five men on Friday in the backpackers in which they were staying at the popular holiday destination on the Transkei Wild Coast.
Godlwana says someone was able to raise the alarm and alert police.
One of the suspects was shot in the leg as he tried to resist arrest after being traced to a nearby tavern.
He's under police guard in hospital while the others managed to flee the scene.
Godlwana said that given the serious nature of the attack, police would charge the man in custody with attempted murder as well as rape and house robbery.
