Rhodes SRC to continue protest until demands are addressed

The Rhodes University SRC says students will continue with protest action against rape and sexual assault until management address their demands.

This follows a  protest by students after the names of eleven past and current students accused of rape were published on social media.

According to statement from the SRC, a memorandum has been handed to the university's management  with a list of eight demands,of which four have been met.

Those agreed on include the hiring of extra staff members at the Harassment office and a task team to change the current sexual harassment policy.

According to the SRC, management has however failed to respond to the other half of their demands which states students who participate in protest action should not face disciplinary action.

In it's statement this demand is highlighted as important following the University's decision to file an interdict to stop the student body and three students from engaging in lawful activities on campus.

SRC Secretary General, Happiness Raselabe, says the student body is planning on fighting the interdict.

"We are still fighting the interdict and there is a way we are going to go about it. It is not something we want to disclose publicly but we will obviously keep our students informed throughout via social media" she said
