Rhodes University SRC says its president, Gift Sandi, was detained in Johannesburg where he attended the Higher Education Summit on Monday.
In a statement circulated on social media a short while ago, the Rhodes SRC said that it had also received confirmation that Sandi had not been charged and would likely not appear in court.
The statement also cautioned that the circumstances surrounding his arrest has not yet been confirmed.
Algoa FM News also understands that Sandi was arrested on a charge of attempted arson.
However, this did not appear to be related to a fire that was started at the basement entrance of the main Admin Building over the weekend.
