The dried up Nqweba dam has brought the community of Graaff-Reinet together who managed to collect 36 625 dead fish from the area.
This after residents started complaining about the stench of fish hanging over the town as well as growing concerns that the fish might contaminate the water, once the rain comes.
A pastor from the Assembly Church in Town, Dolan Cochrane says it gave him the idea to do something to bring the community together.
He says he phoned SANParks who were more than happy to offer assistance. They then made contact with the local municipality and even SAPS offered 360 of their Academy students to help with the clean up, which was held on Saturday.
Cochrane says the Department of Health also came on board and supplied masks and gloves.
He says they were rather surprised at the amount of fish collected and did not even get to all of them.
The Church is hoping to set another date to clean up more dead fish on the far side of the dam, closer to the N9.
