Furious residents in the Walmer area of Port Elizabeth reportedly stormed out of a meeting last night called to discuss the erection of a cellphone mast by Cell C at the Walmer Bowling Club.
Tanya Wyatt, who is coordinating the opposition to the erection of the mast, says Willem Janse van Rensburg of BJB Projects, tried to convince residents that cellphone towers pose no danger to humans.
She says they disputed the claims and also provided research to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality supporting their view that cellphone towers do pose a danger to human health.
"We asked the municipality to look at extending the deadline and acknowledging all the objections so far and they effectively said that they could not do that and we pressed them and eventually we got a lukewarm agreement that they would go back to Cell C and ask them to extend the deadline for objections" Wyatt said.
