The National Heritage Council of South Africa intends to bring home the remains of a Chief of the Khoisan people, Dawid Stuurman, within the next year.
Stuurman would be turning 240 years old this year.
His remains are currently in Austrailia where he passed away.
At a media briefing in Port Elizabeth on Tuesday, the CEO of the National Heritage Council, Advocate Sonwabile Mancotywa, said they wanted to bring Stuurman's remains back to South Africa so that he could receive a proper dignified burial.
"This project is about repatriation of remains of Dawid Stuurman an icon who was a symbol of resistance of the struggle of Koi-San people but few know that in the 1700 and 1800 there were people like Dawid Stuurman. He is the embodiment of the cause of Koi-San people" he said.
