Local Government and Traditional Affairs MEC, Mlibo Qoboshiyane says 30 of the 45 municipalities in the Eastern Cape spent R130.8m on legal and related fees in the 2011/12 financial year.
He told the Bhisho Legislature that the court rolls in all five seats of the High Court in the province, including the Labour Court. were littered with litigation and disputes involving the province's municipalities.
Qoboshiyane said a considerable amount of municipal revenue was spent on these legal disputes, adding that these were funds that could have been ploughed back to the ratepayers to improve service delivery.
