Registration of the metro’s name with the South African Geographic Names Council, so that “Nelson Mandela Bay” can appear on maps, is listed by Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism as one of the challenges that needs to be overcome.
In its 2014/15 Business Plan presented to the Economic Development, Tourism and Agriculture Committee, it says there is also need to address the perception that NMB is a gateway to the Garden Route, and not a destination itself.
It says other challenges in delivering an effective and sustainable return on investment and marketing the destination are an insufficient budget allocation; air travel costs, and the non-disclosure of visitor statistics by both members and non-members.
NMBT also wants the relationship between leisure and business tourism closer aligned to increase market reach and improve seasonality.
It suggests that one way in which this can be achieved, is by promoting a year-round events calendar, with events packaging and promotions.
