Mdantsane cluster commander, Major General Henry Vos has welcomed the life sentences handed down to two convicted rapists by the Grahamstown High Court, sitting in East London.
Acting Judge Amelia Da Silva sentenced 18-year-old Deon Mafongo and 21-year-old Mbongeni Simka to life behind bars last week for their part in a home invasion in Cambridge, East London, in January of 2017.
The woman was alone at home with her 10- year-old daughter at the time when she was held up at knifepoint.
The men demanded money and the safe keys and also asked for her bank card and pin.
One of the accused went to withdraw the money while the others stayed behind and raped her.
They threatened to kill her if she provided them with the incorrect pin.
The third accused, 21-year-old Sive Ntshontshwana was sentenced to one-year imprisonment for burglary and 15 years for robbery with aggravating circumstances.
Major General Vos commended the investigating officer for securing the conviction and sentence and said it should send a clear message that crimes against women will never be tolerated.
