Eastern Cape police have identified the elderly man from Kleinemonde near Port Alfred who was shot dead by an assailant on Monday night.
Police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender, says he was the 79-year-old Pieter De Coning.
He was killed by a lone gunman who fired through the bedroom window of his home at around 11.30pm before fleeing.
Police said that his now severely traumatised wife woke up and noticed someone at the window. When she woke her husband up the gunman allegedly leaned through the window and shot De Coning.
"During the preliminary investigation, forensic experts collected an item of clothing, possibly belonging to the suspect," said police spokesperson, Captain Mali Govender.
