The Eastern Cape provincial veterinary service has started an intensive inoculation programme in parts of Port Elizabeth, following a confirmed case of rabies.
A spokesperson for the service, Jane Pistorius, says a puppy has been diagnosed with rabies in Bethelsdorp, while three other puppies from the same litter may also be infected.
Pistorius says they are conducting door-to-door visits in the area to inoculate dogs against the highly contagious disease.
Friday is international rabies day and awareness programmes have been overtaken by the outbreak of the disease in Port Elizabeth.
