Traffic officials in the Western Cape have made a massive abalone bust at Swellendam.
Western Cape Traffic chief Kenny Africa says provincial traffic officers stopped a Nissan bakkie on the N2 at the weighbridge at Swellendam on Monday morning.
They confiscated 4407 pieces of abolone packed in 44 see-through bags on the back of the bakkie.
The street value of the abalone has been put at R3.8 million.
Africa says the driver of the bakkie was arrested for being in possession of a stolen motor vehicle, displaying false number plates, and for the illegal possession of abalone.
The accused is being held in custody in Swellendam and will appear in court soon.
