Four suspects are due to appear in the New Brighton Magistrate's Court in Port Elizabeth on Wednesday on charges of kidnapping and attempted murder after being apprehended in a high speed police chase through the city Monday night.
Police spokesperson, Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg, says a 33 year-old electrical contractor was working at a sub-station in Commercial Road at around 6 pm when he was confronted by four men who robbed him of his wallet and laptop.
Van Rensburg says the contractor locked himself in the substation and the suspects then fled in his vehicle.
He was able to raise the alarm and a short while later a police patrol spotted his car on the M-17 in Motherwell.
Police fired a number of warning shots as the suspects raced off towards Wells Estate.
The suspects then shot at police when their vehicle was brought to a halt.
Police returned fire and arrested the men. No one was injured.
Janse van Rensburg said police recovered a firearm belonging to the contractor
