Question marks over funding for Chippa United

Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture MEC Pemmy Majodina has told the Bhisho Legislature that there are no funds in her budget for newly promoted Premier Soccer League outfit Chippa United.

Replying to questions during the debate on a report on her budget as to whether R21 million had been made available over three years as part of the relocation costs of Chippa United from the Western Cape to Port Elizabeth, the MEC said no funds had been allocated for this purpose.

The MEC was also asked by Bobby Stevenson of the Democratic Alliance whether any agreement on the funding had been reduced to writing.

The Nelson Mandela Bay Council has earmarked R15 million over three years to pay for the team.

It had been hoping to secure the balance of the total funding required of R36 million from the Eastern Cape Department of Sport, Recreation Arts and Culture.
