The quest to repatriate the remains of Khoisan leader Dawid Stuurman from Australia, has been called off by the National Heritage Council of South Africa.
Speaking to the media on Tuesday at a colloquium at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University today, Council CEO, Sonwabile Mancotywa, said it had not been easy to trace Stuurman's remains in spite of a year-long search by experts, including the High Commissioners of both South Africa and Australia.
He says the National Heritage Council had come to the conclusion that they will not be able to trace Stuurman's remains.
Mancotywa says the Council would hold a series of events in April next year which would amount to a spiritual repatriation of Stuurman.
"We expect the spiritual repatriation to take place in April when South Africa celebrate 20 years of democracy. We hope this will be an event that will unify the people of South Africa so far the minister of arts and culture is in the process of getting in touch with his counterpart in Australia regarding this matter" he said
