Provincial transport master plan remains on track

The Eastern Cape Transport Ministry says it is hoped that the Provincial Transport Master Plan can be adopted in October.

The Master Plan seeks to lay a roadmap that will transform public transport in the Eastern Cape and lead to the integration of bus, taxi and train services for the benefit of all public transport users.

The first phase of the preparation has focussed on the collection of data and confirmation of the challenges faced by providers and users of the existing public transport system.

Transport Department spokesperson, Ncedo Kumbaca, says the Provincial Integrated Public Transport Master Plan is now entering the second phase of preparation.

"We are now in the process of identifying the demand trends for public transportation in the province as we intend to ensure once the strategy is in place we can even introduce scheduled services for specific routes, because we want to make sure that we don't utilise public transport in routes that are not viable for that particular public transport mode. That is the process now that we are undertaking" Kumbaca said.
