Community protests in three districts in the Eastern Cape resulted in nine voter registration stations from opening on Saturday, according to the Independent Electoral Commission in the province.
Provincial electoral officer, Khayakazi Magudumana, said there were problems at a total of 20 registration stations where community protests and over service delivery matters even though IEC officials were ready to proceed with registration.
She appealed to community members to allow those interested in registering to vote to do as it was their democratic right following the protests in the OR Tambo, Alfred Nzo and Sarah Baartman Districts.
Magudumana also called on members of the public who were unable to register on Saturday to so on Sunday, on the final day of registration.
Meanwhile, the IEC in the Eastern Cape said in an update in the early evening on Saturday that there was a total of “177 000 transactions”, of which 25 394 were new registrations.
The provincial electoral officer said there were also 104 500 re-registrations while 47 106 people changed their voting districts.
Magudumana said Nelson Mandela Bay and Buffalo City Metro accounted for the bulk of new registrations.
