Protests continue throughout EC

Several protests continued throughout different parts of the Eastern Cape on Thursday night.

In King Williams Town fires were burning in the streets with electric boxes also burning.

It is believed that members from SAMWU who are currently on an illegal strike, set the fires before running away.

The municipal workers from both King Williams Town and East London started protesting on Monday.

Meanwhile, a group of about 60 protestors started blocking various roads in Nolukhanyo township in Bathurst using old fridges, bushes, tyres and anything else they could get their hands on.

Police Spokesperson Captain Mali Govender says the community was addressed by their local councillor but they wanted to speak to the Mayor.

The group then tried blocking the R67 but police managed to clear the road.

Govender says one of their grievances is the fact that the Ndlambe Municipality takes too long to send trucks to remove septic toilet tanks.

The protesters grew to a group of about 150 and reconvened on Thursday morning.

The R67 between Grahamstown and Port Alfred is closed.

The visible police units are monitoring the situation.
