Serial rapist Luvuyo Mananga of Mdantsane in East London has been sentenced to three life terms and more than 200 years after DNA helped seal his fate.
Bhisho High Court judge, Belinda Hartle, said on Wednesday that the 38-year-old was a “menace and danger to society” who deserved to be taken away for a long time.
Mananga was arrested on an unrelated rape case when detectives using DNA “linkages” positively tied him to 11 other cases of rape, robbery, kidnapping and aggravating robbery committed between 2007 and 2011.
He was convicted earlier in November on a total of 27 charges.
In passing sentence, Judge Hartle ordered that the sentences should run concurrently, effectively handing Mananga a triple life sentence and a total of 205 years behind bars.
In welcoming the hefty jail term, Eastern Cape police commissioner, Lieutenant-General Liziwe Ntshinga, thanked the individuals and community groups who had offered support, help and counselling to his victims.
