A section of Buffelsfontein Road in Port Elizabeth remains closed as community members from Walmer Township await the arrival of Metro officials to address them on long-standing service delivery issues.
There has been a strong police presence in the area since early on Wednesday morning.
Police captain Alwin Labans says the situation is calm at the moment but had become tense earlier.
He said a number of Walmer Township residents had converged on the Walmer Police Station on hearing that some of their members had been arrested.
Labans said he was not sure who had started the rumour but that nothing of the sort had happened.
He says residents returned to the entrance to Walmer Township at 9th avenue and Buffelsfontein once police had convinced them that none of their members had been arrested.
