Protest action flares up in Walmer Township

Protest action has flared up this morning in Walmer Township in Port Elizabeth - with police using stun grenades and rubber bullets to disperse the protesters.

Police are warning motorists to avoid Victoria Drive where a group of disgruntled township residents are being contained by public order policing members.

Victoria Drive remains closed.

Police Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg told AlgoaFM News that Buffelsfontein Road and Heugh Road between 11th Avenue and 9th Avenue had been closed for a short while - but was now open to traffic again as the protesters had been dispersed.

Police are maintaining a strong presence in the area.
