Prosecutor gets eight years for corruption

File

A Uitenhage prosecutor has been given an eight-year jail sentence for corruption.

The National Prosecuting Authority said 46-year-old Thozama Takane, was sentenced in the Port Elizabeth Specialised Commercial Crimes Court on Wednesday.

“Takane who is currently suspended, accepted a bribe of R 1 500 from two accused persons, Luvuyo Bokwe and Nxaxho Crosby, in exchange for terminating their case of assault with intent to do grievous bodily harm,” said NPA spokesperson, Anelisa Ngcakani.

She said as soon as the payments were made Takane withdrew the charges and Bokwe reported the matter to the Hawks leading to his arrest.

Magistrate Johannes Claassen said Takane abused his position of trust, not only towards his employer but also towards the community who looked up to him.

However, he granted Takane’s application for leave to appeal and also granted him R5000 bail pending the outcome of the appeal.
