The Road Traffic Management Corporation has begun the probe into Monday's horror bus accident in the Eastern Cape which claimed at least 28 lives.
Transport Minister, Fikile Mbalula, said in a statement into the DMJ bus crash that a report would be released once the investigation has been done.
He extended his condolences to the families of the deceased saying that “the loss of life is tragic and brings untold suffering to families who have lost loved ones or breadwinners.”
The Eastern Cape Transport Department said the bus crashed in the ‘Kei Cuttings’, between Butterworth and East London late Monday afternoon.
Spokesperson Unathi Binqose said six people were taken to hospital with injuries, while one person was said to be “in critical condition”.
A number of other passengers survived uninjured.
Binqose said the bus was travelling from Cape Town to Mthatha, with passengers destined for Ngcobo, Butterworth and Dutywa as well.
He said in "expressing deep pain at the accident", the MEC for Transport, Weziwe Tikana-Gxotiwe has called on the investigation teams to leave nothing to chance in investigating the cause of the accident in a bid to avert a similar occurrence.
Binqose said the wreckage of the bus was removed from the crash scene for accident investigators to continue their probe.
He said the next process now is the identification of the deceased and those in hospital, and that process commenced already.
