An investigation is underway into the cause of an explosion at a factory in the East London Industrial Development Zone on Tuesday night.
The incident happened after 10pm at Feltex Automotive Trim, a company supplying automotive acoustic components to the motor industry.
Police spokesperson, Warrant Officer Hazel Mqala, said in a statement that “11 people, eight men and three women, sustained injuries” and were taken to a Beacon Bay hospital.
She said fire-fighters were also “summoned to extinguish the fire”, adding that the factory was now closed.
Warrant Officer Mqala said that an “inquiry” will be opened.
In a statement on Tuesday night, the ELIDZ said “that there was an incident within one of our enterprises in the zone.”
“At this point we have not yet ascertained the cause or the extent of the damage. Emergency Services and our technical team are on site. There were no major injuries reported,” the ELIDZ said.
“The ELIDZ will, upon establishing all the facts release a full media statement tomorrow (Weds).”
According to its website, Feltex Automotive Trim is a “leading supplier of automotive acoustic comfort and trim components.”
The company has manufacturing facilities in East London and Port Elizabeth.
